What would you sacrifice for your family’s love? Your values? Your freedom? Your life?

German-born Umay flees from her oppressive marriage in Istanbul, taking her young son Cem with her. She is hoping to find a better life with her family in Berlin, but her unexpected arrival creates intense conflict. Her family is trapped in their conventions. They are torn between their love for her and the traditional values of their community. Ultimately, they decide to return Cem to his father in Turkey. To keep her son, Umay is forced to move again. She finds the inner strength to build a new life for herself and Cem, but her need for her family’s love drives her to a series of ill-fated attempts at reconciliation. What Umay doesn’t realize is just how deep the wounds are and how dangerous her struggle for self-determination has become …

You think you know the story because you have heard about it (or a similar one) on the news. However WHEN WE LEAVE is a gripping, complex portrait of a family in crisis, far removed from any clichés. The theme tackled in this film is universal: the clash between an individual’s desire for self-fulfillment and the pressures of family and society.

WHEN WE LEAVE marked the debut as scriptwriter, producer and director for Feo Aladag, who started her film career as an actress.

The film had its world premiere at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival and was awarded over 30 international prizes, including two German Film Awards for Best Film and Best Actress, the LUX Film Prize for Best European Film, the New Faces Award (Germany) for Best First Feature, the Grand Prize for Best Film at Tribeca Film Festival, as well as many others from festivals including Athens, Calgary, Ft. Lauderdale, Ghent, Marrakech, Montreal and Sao Paulo.

WHEN WE LEAVE ultimately played at over 100 film festivals worldwide, in 73 countries and on 6 continents and it was chosen as Germany’s official entry to the Oscars in 2010.
